Newsletter - April 28, 2023

Dear MARVEL'ers,

Please find below our latest newsletter, with highlights and news linked to the MARVEL community.

This month, read about the key role of inter-site Hubbard interactions for the correct energetics of spinel Li-ion cathode materials. You can read too about MARVEL's William Curtin being the recipient of the Irwin Gold Medal. The award recognizes his pioneering contributions to multiscale mechanics modeling of materials: congratulations to Bill!

Mark your calendars for the upcoming MARVEL Distinguished Lectures by Prof. Claudia Felser (May 2) and Prof. Emmanouil Kioupakis (June 20).

Most importantly, we are now welcoming Nicola Nosengo as our new Communication officer for MARVEL. Nicola joins us after having had many years of experience as a science writer (recently with the NCCR Robotics), and he is currently the chief editor of Nature Italy. Nicola is already well integrated in the management team (and is the author of the research highlight below, among others). We are very thankful for Carey Sargent's contributions and wish her all the best in her future endeavors!

Crucial role of inter-site Hubbard interactions for the correct energetics of spinel Li-ion cathode materials

NCCR MARVEL researchers have applied DFT with extended Hubbard functionals (DFT+U+V) to the study of two candidate cathode materials belonging to the class of lithium-manganese-oxide spinels. They used a new approach to determine the Hubbard U and V parameters entirely from first principles and found that the method accurately predicts the geometrical properties, oxidation states, band gaps, and voltages of the two materials. The article was included in the "2023 PCCP HOT Articles" collection.

Irwin Gold Medal

William Curtin receives the Irwin Gold Medal

Professor William Curtin, head of the Laboratory for Multiscale Mechanics Modeling (LAMMM) at EPFL's School of Engineering and a NCCR MARVEL project leader, has been awarded the Irwin Gold Medal by the 2023 International Congress on Fracture (ICF). The award recognizes his "pioneering contributions to multiscale mechanics modeling of materials".

For the younger generation of MARVEL'ers

Equal opportunity activities for young girls and boys in fall 2023

MARVEL and EPFL's Science Outreach Department are pleased to announce equal opportunity initiatives targeting girls and boys. Registrations for the 2023-2024 edition of the mathematics workshops Maths en jeu (girls and boys 8 to 15 years old) are opening on 1st May 2023. Those for the science workshop Diamants, alu, caoutchouc, ils sont fous ces matériaux (girls 7-10 years old) are opening on 15 May 2023. Both will fill up quickly. The Coding club des filles is proposing workshops with registrations all along the year.
