Workshop — Writing a good paper

Contents 

Writing papers is one of the most important activities we perform.  The plain fact  is that developing elegant theories and performing elaborate and complex experiments is only useful if we can clearly communicate the results to our colleagues.  In this interactive workshop we will spend some time thinking about the process of writing a scientific paper.  We will begin by considering papers the papers that you helped you in your research and those that have not helped.  The aim of this exercise is for you to think about what it is that makes papers clear so that you can copy these aspects when you come to write your own papers.  In the second part of the workshop you will then learn about how you can critically read each others work and how you should go about giving feedback on the papers that others have written.

To make the workshop a success, you must bring the following items:

(1)  A paper that you thought was good and that has been helpful in your research

(2)  A paper that you thought was bad and that was unclear

(3)  A figure that you have made for a report together with a caption that describes what is shown in the figure

(4)  A page long introduction that describes what you are working on.        

To reiterate it is essential that you bring these items with you.
