The 2025 Berni J. Alder CECAM prize has been awarded to Giulia Galli, Professor at the University of Chicago and member of MARVEL's Scientific Advisory Board. The Prize recognizes exceptional contributions to the field of microscopic simulation of matter and is awarded every three years. It recognizes Galli's  transformative contributions to computational molecular science in the domain of novel methods for large-scale electronic structure and molecular dynamics simulations. The award ceremony will be held on November 12, 2025, in EPFL (room SV 1717) and online as an opening of a mini workshop on "Recent Advances in Computational Materials Science".

The 41st NCCR MARVEL Distinguished Lecture will be given by Prof. Hannes Jónsson (University of Iceland). He will be presenting a lecture entitled: "Calculations of excited electronic states using saddle point searches and self-interaction corrected density functionals, with comparison to neural-network selective configuration interaction".

The MARVEL Junior Seminars aim to intensify interactions between the MARVEL Junior scientists belonging to different research groups – this is held in hybrid mode, in order to maintain in-person contacts and allow off-campus attendees to follow the seminars remotely! We are pleased to propose the 67th MARVEL Junior Seminar:  Linda Mauron (Computational Quantum Science Laboratory - CQSL, EPFL) and Mario Caserta (Laboratory of Theory and Simulation of Materials - THEOS, EPFL) will present their research. 

The 41st NCCR MARVEL Distinguished Lecture – also an EPFL IMX Colloquium –  will be given by Prof. Cody Friesen (Arizona State University, USA). He will be presenting a lecture entitled: "Translating Breakthroughs: From Scientific Discovery to Human Impact".

Psi-k 2025 is the 7th general conference for the worldwide Psi-k community. Held every 5 years, this event is the largest worldwide in first-principles simulations. The conference has already received 1300 registration and has reached capacity! It promises to be the most exciting, defining event in the field, offering a stimulating and enjoyable atmosphere, in addition to a chance to explore the beautiful region around Lausanne and Lake Geneva.  

In this THEOS-MARVEL seminar, Prof. David O'Regan (Trinity College Dublin, Ireland)  will address "The partner of the Hubbard U: interpretation of Hund’s J in DFT+U methods, linear-response calculations for J, and the results to expect".

We are pleased to invite you to an upcoming webinar introducing two major platforms designed to support the computational materials science community: Lhumos, the new e-learning platform designed to support domain specific training in high-performance computing (HPC) and quantum and classical simulations of matter, and the recently upgraded Materials Cloud Archive repository. 

The 1-week camp entitled Des atomes aux ordinateurs, à la découverte de la programmation scientifique is open to teenagers in the last two years of high-school, with no high-level in maths or physics prerequisite. A prior knowledge of the basics of programming is recommended. It is possible to acquire these notions independently if necessary (within 3-4 hours). Half of the seats are reserved for young women. In 2025, it will take place from 23 to 27 June at EPFL. Still a few free spots!

This is a MARVEL-wide "Metatensor Ecosystem Workshop", to be held on June 13, 2025 at the EPFL main campus. The workshop introduces the Metatensor ecosystem, an interoperable collection of software from COSMO developed in part for MARVEL Pillar 2. Metatensor addresses all the practical needs associated with atomistic machine learning (ML), from data storage and handling to model training with various ML architectures for a variety of learning targets.
